The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) describes an A1 learner as a basic user of English, i.e. able to communicate in everyday situations with commonly-used expressions and elementary vocabulary. The CEFR is a globally recognized language system that defines and explains what language learners should be able to do in speaking, writing, listening and reading of their target language at different levels of the learning process. A1 is the first level or the elementary in the CEFR.
What language competences characterise an A1 level learner in English? According to the CEFR, the learner:
The elementary step-by-step curriculum is designed to give students the confidence to start communicating in English. The A1 level is broken up into two courses (A1.1 and A1.2) of 6 units and 18 lessons each for a total of 72 academic hours.
