The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) describes an A2 KEY learner as a pre-intermediate user of English, i.e. able to communicate in everyday situations with commonly-used expressions and elementary vocabulary. The CEFR is a globally recognized language system that defines and explains what language learners should be able to do in speaking, writing, listening and reading of their target language at different levels of the learning process. A2 KEY is the first level or the intermediate in the CEFR.
What language competences characterize an A2 KEY level learner in English? According to the CEFR, the learner:
Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
The elementary step-by-step curriculum is designed to give students the confidence to start communicating in English. The A2 level is a total of 72 academic hours.
